THE BOOK OF SAINT GEORGE

JAUME COPONS

In mid-2023, Noemí Mercadé, our editor, asked us if we wanted to make a book about Saint George. She told us we could focus on the legend, the history and myth, or the celebration of the holiday. She also said we could propose a graphic novel, a content book, or an album. Before giving her an answer, we began to research, and suddenly, we became interested in everything: the myth and its origin, the festival, and, obviously, the legend. Unable to make a choice, we decided we would make the book and tell everything!

Indeed, we have addressed the history and myth and the celebration of the holiday. And, obviously, we have also recreated the legend based largely on the 13th-century Golden Legend. And although our proposal is a graphic novel, the central part of the book becomes the legend in the format of an illustrated album. You will see that we give much more space to the knight's battle with the dragon than is usual in albums. This is because we realized that the battle between Saint George and the beast inexplicably tends to be resolved as if it were insignificant or of no importance. We, and the children we once were, wanted to see and teach how that fierce and heroic battle was.

Finally, as a closing to the book, we have included some very useful instructions for fighting a dragon. We know that finding a dragon in the real world is quite difficult, but when we start to imagine... you never know!

As always, in this book, we have been accompanied by Noemí Mercadé and the designer Miquel Puig. Making books with people who believe in them, make them their own, and love them is a pleasure.

We think that The Book of Saint George will be enjoyed by both young and old, and we secretly hope that it will be one of those books that, no matter how much time passes, readers will keep in their library.

We hope you enjoy The Book of Saint George as much as we have enjoyed writing and drawing it.
